Experience

Prior to starting Wagtail Engineering in 2015, Andrew held a number of technical, commercial, and research roles as detailed below:

Principal Consultant, Atkins
  • Andrew was responsible for the delivery of specialist subsea engineering consultancy services to clients, throughout the full life cycle of projects. Typical projects include feasibility studies, market/strategy reviews, and due diligence work. Andrew’s particular interests included integrity management, and reuse and decommissioning studies.
  • Andrew took a lead role in a number of joint industry projects including the Cause-Oriented Inspection Strategy (COINS) project facilitated by the ITF and the Decommissioning JIP run by Oil and Gas UK. He managed the Good Operational Practice Forum on behalf of the Pipeline Users Group.
  • Andrew managed the Subsea team within Atkins, with responsibility for business development, resourcing, recruitment, staff development, and mentoring. He had direct and indirect management responsibility for approximately 30 staff and contractors.
  • Andrew was responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Atkins Subsea office in Newcastle, which included general “house management” and ensuring that all legal and HSE requirements were met.

Proposals Manager, CTC Marine Projects
  • Andrew was responsible for managing the development, preparation and submission of all of CTC Marine Projects’ tenders for subsea work in several worldwide marketplaces. His team provided proposals selling trenching and installation services to the open market and provided ongoing support to main contractor framework partners in their tenders.
  • Andrew directly managed a team of up to five Proposals Leaders and Engineers and worked with an extended tender support network comprising all company departments as well as external consultants. The team produced in excess of 200 proposals per annum, ranging from vessel charters to large-scale installation and trenching projects. His role involved review and evaluation of technical solutions and assessment of commercial viability. The company underwent significant growth during the period that he was in this role.
  • Andrew and his team liaised with all functions within the company to prepare tenders that offered customers technically and commercially attractive solutions to their requirements. They worked on bids from the Invitation to Tender stage through to contract signature and project-team handover. Andrew had responsibility for pricing projects based on in-house and subcontracted equipment, and for obtaining approval from the Commercial, Financial and Managing Directors.

Pipeline Engineer, Penspen
  • Andrew was employed as an engineering technical specialist responsible for performing pipeline integrity work including: corrosion and damage assessment, review of repair and rehabilitation options, pipeline inspection, reliability and availability assessment, risk-based assessment, pipeline audit and offshore pipeline survey.
  • Andrew was involved with projects at all stages including discussion of client requirements, preparation of technical and commercial proposals, quality assurance, project management and execution, and project reporting and presentation. He had profit-loss responsibility for the projects under his control.

Research Fellow, Engineering Design Centre (Newcastle University)
  • Andrew’s PhD research investigated asset care of power generation equipment through the development of generic methodologies, under the sponsorship of a world-leading diesel engine manufacturer.
  • Andrew's work involved the creation of tools for predictive maintenance of medium speed diesel engines and concentrated on using a fuzzy logic database to analyse fault pattern data, resulting in a generic method for system-independent facilitation of fault recognition. The work culminated in proof-of-method for the scheduling of predictive maintenance through fault prioritisation.
